Weave the Base

Cross the prepared vine strips to build the base that defines the bag’s proportions and structure.

02 / 08

Shape on the Mold

Fit the woven base to a form and set the rise of the sides before building the body.

03 / 08

Weave the Body

Work upward around the mold, controlling tension, spacing and pattern entirely by hand.

04 / 08

Finish the Rim

Close and refine the upper edge, stabilizing the silhouette and reinforcing the structure.

05 / 08

Attach the Handles

Position and secure the handles to balance strength, proportion and comfort in hand.

06 / 08

Singe Fine Fibres

Briefly pass the surface over flame to remove fine fibres and prepare it for a cleaner finish.

The difference lives in the details.

Natural vine is never perfectly uniform. Tension, spacing, corners and finishing are adjusted by hand to suit the material in front of the maker.

Behind eight core stages lies the time spent preparing the vine.

According to the workshop’s product documentation, making a wild-grape-vine basket bag involves around 18 stages, from preparing the material to the final finish. The process map highlights eight core stages that show how the bag takes shape. Soaking, peeling, splitting, and adjusting the width and thickness of each strip also shape the final feel and structure.

Around 18 stagesHandwoven at the coreNatural wild grape vine

Every vine strip differs in thickness, texture and flexibility. Artisans adjust tension, spacing, corners and the rim to suit the material in their hands.

Material

Natural wild grape vine

Each strip has its own texture, colour and strength. With regular use, the surface gradually develops a deeper, warmer patina.

Lining

Persimmon-tannin dyed lining

Selected designs use a persimmon-tannin dyed lining with a natural brown colour and understated texture. Specifications vary; please refer to the individual product details.

Care

Everyday use and care

Avoid heavy rain and prolonged soaking. If the bag gets wet, blot it with a dry cloth and let it air-dry in a shaded, well-ventilated place. Clean with a soft brush or dry cloth. Avoid detergents, hair dryers and strong direct sunlight.
