PUTAOYAO works with natural wild grape vine. The material is prepared, dried and made ready for weaving before artisans shape it by hand, strand by strand. Joining the strips, keeping the weave even and finishing the edges all call for practiced hands and close attention.
The character of the bark
The choice and preparation of the bark influence its colour and feel. Outer-layer bark generally retains a more pronounced natural texture, while further-prepared inner-layer bark has a finer surface and a lighter tone. Please refer to this piece’s specifications and photographs for its bark type, strip width, weave and handle construction.
A patina shaped by everyday use
The appeal of wild grape vine develops over time. Gentle handling and regular use gradually bring a mellow sheen to the surface and deepen its colour. Made to accompany everyday life across the seasons, each piece develops a character shaped by its owner.
Natural materials and hand weaving create subtle differences in colour, texture and shape. The surface may catch on silk or delicate knitwear; take care when pairing these fabrics.
CRAFT PROCESS
From this piece, back to the hands that made it.
From preparing the vine to final finishing, the complete making process can be divided into roughly 18 steps. Here we show eight key stages that make the shaping and finishing logic easy to understand. Details vary by design.

Wild grape vine is a natural material. With considerate use, its color, luster and hand gradually deepen over time.
Avoid prolonged strong sunlight, crushing pressure and proximity to open flame.
Avoid contact with chemical cleaners, solvents and similar products.
If the piece becomes damp, gently restore its shape and allow it to air-dry naturally in a shaded, well-ventilated place.
We do not recommend beeswax, wax-based conditioners or polishes. Gentle everyday use and light dusting with a soft dry cloth or soft brush are sufficient for routine care.
The natural vine surface may catch on silk or delicate knitwear; please take care when pairing materials.
